2017 The Moorooduc McIntyre Chardonnay

2017 The Moorooduc McIntyre Chardonnay

The Wine

This wine represents the pinnacle of style and quality of Moorooduc Estate ‘McIntyre Vineyard’ Chardonnay.  A result of a stringent fruit selection from our oldest chardonnay vines this wine expresses the unique characters of this vineyard site.

The slow ripening in the bunches has given us a McIntyre Chardonnay that is more restrained and elegant than we have seen in more typical years, but it still shows delicious concentration and complexity.  Pale gold in colour, the nose is quite savoury, with briny oyster shell minerality, salted lemon rind and creamy fresh cheese curd aromas.  On the palate the lemon becomes more intense, and is joined by some earthy mushroomy, almond and hazelnut flavours.  Lots of umami here, and long, linear acidity on the finish.

A terrific match to kingfish sashimi, deep fried oysters in besan batter, or a bowl of Jill’s famous bouillabaisse (a garlicky fish stew, originally from the South of France)

The 2017 Vintage.
The 2017 vintage began with some early difficulties but turned out well, producing small quantities of high quality wine.  High wind and rain during flowering resulted in some uneven fruit set and smaller crops than preferred, but mild, even conditions after that produced beautiful slow ripening of small bunches with lovely flavours, concentration and firm acidity in the finished wines.
